Introduction

The Boerboel is a dog breed that was placed on Denmark’s list of banned dogs since 2010 for their aggressive temperament and usage as pit fighting dogs. This is the only native South African dog breed created to guard, protect and defend homesteads.

History

The Boerboel dog breed originates in South Africa and surrounding areas and believed to have been bred since 1652. These large mastiff-type dogs were originally homestead guardians. They were developed by European settlers to guard and protect and often the first line of defense when African wild animals such as lions, hyenas and other big wild cats intrude in human territory. They are also great hunting dogs that display impressive tracking skills of wounded game. Boerboel dogs got their name from the Dutch and Afrikaans “Boer” which is translated in English as “farmer”. The precise lineage and breeding history of the Boerboel is not well documented but most dog experts believe they are the result of interbreeding indigenous African dogs to Dutch, English and French dog breeds. Today, breeding the Boerboel is not just a hobby in South Africa, it is considered as an industry as they are exported to various parts of the world. Some owners of Boerboel train them for dogfights which resulted in the breed being banned in several countries.

Personality

They are the ultimate South African guard dogs! Boerboels are strong and agile protectors that will defend its territory with impressive courage. They are also calm dogs that have a stable disposition and very composed. This makes them prized watchdogs that are sought after all over the world. Boerboels are also very obedient and very intelligent making them one of the top choices when it comes to guarding dog breeds. They will be great guards in rural and urban communities.

Bred For

The Boerboel was originally created to be the consummate guard dog that will defend the homestead against wild African game.

Environment

The Boerboel should not be kept as an apartment pet. They can be guard dogs in urban areas but is preferred to be rural dwellers.

Grooming

The Boerboel will be easy to groom. This is a large dog that will shed an average amount.

Training

The Boerboel may display willfulness and often be headstrong. This may result in some difficulty when being trained. They can be well trained and will be obedient if trainers are firm, consistent and dominant.

Health

Boerboels are famous for being very healthy but various health problems do occur. These may include hip and elbow dysplasia, ectropion and entropion. Female Boerboels are known to be affected by vaginal hyperplasia. In recent years epilepsy in young Boerboels appeared in significant numbers which are thought to be caused by stress or metabolism change.

Exercise

Like most working dogs their size, the Boerboels are active dogs that will require plenty of activities. They are dogs that require open spaced to run.
