History
The Bohemian Shepherd or also known as the Bohemian Herder is a dog breed that originates in the area of the modern-day Czech Republic sometime during the 14th century. This is a very old dog breed that was created to be sheepherders and guardians. They got its name from the Bohemian borders known today as the areas covering the town of Domažlice in the Czech Republic’s Chod region. They are so prized for their guarding skills that this breed has been professionally and commercially bred since the 16th century. In 1984, breeders initialized a modern breeding program that resulted in over 3,500 Bohemian Shepherd Dogs being born and registered.

Personality
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog is not for the lazy type. They are dogs that will be active and packed with high energy. These Czech dog breed is not known to be aggressive and will be excellent to have around children and other pets. They are agile and intelligent, making them great for rescue operations as well as companion pets. The Bohemian Shepherd is first and foremost a guard dog that will display a calm, friendly and stable disposition.

Bred For
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog was developed to be border guards and frontier watchdogs. Later on, this breed was used as herders of livestock.

Environment
The Bohemian Shepherd is very adaptable when it comes to living conditions. They can be indoor or outdoor dogs. They do need human contact as this breed is naturally people-oriented. They can live in cities but are preferred to have as rural or suburban pets.

Grooming
The Bohemian Herder has a long coat that is surprisingly low maintenance when it comes to grooming needs. These dogs only need brushing once a week and bathe only when it is really necessary. They are dogs that shed hair in the average amount.

Training
This herding dog breed is rather easy to train as they are known to be very eager to please their owners. They are also very obedient dogs and will respond very well if gentle and non-repetitive training methods are used.

Health
There are no known major health problems that commonly affect the Bohemian Herder breed. This makes them very healthy dogs.

Exercise
The Bohemian Shepherd has a high activity level and should be kept by people who can keep up with them. These are dogs with very high requirements when it comes to exercise.
