History

Originally called the Italian Bichon, the Bolognese dog is considered to be an Old World Bichon and one of the oldest breeds today. Their distant ancestors are believed to have been used on ships as far back as two thousand years ago. They used these ancient dogs to hunt rodents as well as serve as watchdogs while the ships are at port. Through time, the Bolognese breed rose to popularity, from being rodent hunters on ships, they became companion pets for royalty. Royal blood such as the Empress of Austria, Maria Theresa, Peter the Great’s wife, Catherine I as well as Catherine de Medicis to name a few have these dogs as their pets.

Personality

The Bolognese is a dog that is eager to please. They enjoy being with its people, showing their sweet and affectionate traits as often as they can around family.
