Introduction

They are famous for being the dog world’s most hardworking herders; the Border Collie also earned the distinction of being the smartest dogs among all the breeds. That distinction came from Mr. Stanley Coren, author of the book The Intelligence of Dogs.

History

Bred to head sheep and work closely with their owners, the Border Collie was first developed in Great Britain’s border country region between England and Scotland, where they got their name. They were initially called Scotch Sheep Dogs. Among the herding dog breeds, these Collies are known for their impressive eyesight which they use while on the job. The breed continues to be used as herding dog and companion in Great Britain and North America and gained recent popularity in several canine performance sports, especially in agility.

Personality

Border collie’s are dogs famous for being responsive, intelligent and highly energetic. They are reserved when around strangers but will show affection to friends and families. Known to be friendly with children and other dogs, these collies’ natural instinct might show as aggressive when they show their natural drive to herd children and pets. They will chase livestock, cats and other fast-moving animals so be warned. But this only shows how hardworking they are and loves to show how eager they are to perform and please their master.

Environment

They are not the perfect apartment or city dogs. A home with an average to small-sized yard space that is fenced would make this collie extremely happy.

Grooming

These dogs need regular attention when it comes to grooming. Regular combing and brushing should be done to keep the coat gleaming. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Their very high intelligence makes the Border collie a highly trainable dog.

Health

This dog breed is prone to PRA and Osteochondritis disease or OCD.

Exercise

Exercise is a special need for the Border collie breed. Having daily long walks with them is highly recommended.
