Introduction

Like most small dogs, Border Terriers are big dogs trapped in a small body. For a terrier their size, these dogs are known to have impressive skills in the areas of hunting, tracking, watchdog, agility, competitive obedience as well as performing tricks.

History

Originally called the Coquetdale Terrier, the Border Terrier got its official name in the year 1880, getting their name after the region where they were first bred. This was the Cheviot Hills region within what is known as the border areas of England and Scotland. Considered to be Great Britain’s oldest breed of terriers, these dogs were used to hunt foxes, hunting together with Border foxhounds. Game aficionados bred and developed the breed to create a hunting dog that is large enough to keep up with the horses, but small enough to go to ground and bolt foxes. Before, the 1900’s, the Border Terrier dog breed was rarely known outside its native region.

Personality

Border Terrier dogs are smart enough to differentiate home lifestyles to their hunting work. At home, they are good-tempered and affectionate, but once in the field, they turn into very alert, always game and highly active hunting dogs.

Bred For

Hunting foxes in the rough terrain of the Border region between Scotland and England.
Environment: The Border Terrier will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. But homes in the country or suburbs are more suitable for them.

Grooming

They have durable wiry coats that need special attention. Grooming by brushing should be done once a week while having them professionally groomed every six months is recommended. The Border Terrier sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.

Training

Training them would take some time for these dogs’ tendency to be stubborn and overactive.

Health

There are quite a few major health problems for this breed including Cataracts, epilepsy, heart defects, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, PRA and shunts.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the special needs of the Border Terrier. They need long daily walks or brisk runs. Ideally, a home with an average-sized yard will be sufficient to have the Border Terrier running and roaming.
