Introduction

They were bred and exclusively owned by Russian nobility back before the days of the Bolsheviks, the Borzoi dog breed got its name from the Russian word “borzii”, which literally means swift. An apt name as these dogs is known to be speed demons while on the hunt!

History

Since the thirteenth century, coursing hounds such as the Borzoi have been known in Russia. The Borzoi breed can trace its ancestry to the early Russian bear hounds known as the coursing hounds of the Tatar and other Ovcharkas. Russian aristocracy used these dogs exclusively; they were bred to hunt wolves. Development started by crossing the Arabian Greyhound with other longer haired Russian sheepdogs. Back then it was rare to own a Borzoi dog if you are not a member of the nobility and they were rarely bought or sold, but often given or received as a gift. During the Bolshevik Revolution, the breed was nearly wiped out, as revolutionaries destroyed slaughtered number of dogs which were associated with the ruling class. A few dogs were saved and exported to Great Britain and North America, where breeding programs were established.

Personality

Borzoi is an affectionate dog, especially with its family. They are also known to be stubborn and independent. These dogs have a high prey drive and tend to be swift runners. They get along with children if socialized but are considered not trustworthy with small animals.

Environment

They are not suitable for apartment type homes. The suitable environments are rural or suburban homes with an adequate yard that is fenced up.

Grooming

They require easy grooming maintenance for their long and silky coat. They are a breed that is seasonal heavy shedders.

Training

They can be trained in obedience but needs consistent and firm positive training with gentle hands. Socialization must be done early to avoid dog-aggressive behavior.

Health

For such an old breed, the Borzoi is a dog plagued by several health ailments. Primarily is this breed’s tendency to bloat, so avoiding large meals is a must. They are also sensitive to drugs. Some lines are prone to hip and shoulder dysplasia, OCD and PRA.

Exercise

Borzoi dogs’ demands exercise sessions that are done daily and regularly.
