This breed is one of many variety of the Bouvier dog breed. This includes that now extinct Bouvier de Roulers, Bouvier de Paret and the Bouvier de Moerman. The only remaining variety is Bouvier de Ardennes and their cousins the Bouvier des Flandres.

History

The Bouvier des Ardennes or called the Ardennes Cattle or Cow Dog in English is considered to be one of the rarest dog breeds today. They originated in Belgium’s Ardennes region is symbolizes the versatile and resilient traits of the people living in the rough conditions of the Ardennes region. The breed’s name comes from two sources, the place of their origin and the word Bouvier which is English for bovine herding dogs. They are prized in Belgium for their guardian skills and flock driving abilities. This breed nearly went extinct by the end of World War I and many varieties of this breed have died out and lost forever.

Personality

The Bouvier de Ardennes are natural working dogs that will love and should be put to work. These are very independent dogs but are also known for being obedient and loving towards their handlers and family. These are dogs that are instinctively very keen and alert, making them great watch and guard dogs. They are dogs that will be wary of strangers. Overall, the Bouvier de Ardennes dog is a tireless and persistent working dog that will be gentle when around family.

The Bouvier de Ardennes is a working dog that is accustomed to working hard. It is an independent dog that is very loving and obedient to its owners and family. Instinctively very alert, the dog makes an excellent watch and guard dog as it is wary of strangers.
