Introduction

Looks can really be deceiving! Bouvier des Flandres or commonly known as Flanders Cattle Dogs may look intimidating for their large, powerful and squarely built bodies, but this Belgian import is actually pleasant in nature and very gentle.

History

Originally used for herding and driving cattle, Bouvier des Flandres dogs are Belgian cattle dogs hailing from the Flanders area of their native country. It is believed to be descended from Continental herding breeds, such as the schnauzer. Deemed as obsolete when the automobile was invented, the time where cattle transportation by the use of trucks became standard. Fortunately, fans of this breed didn’t let the Flanders Cattle Dog, as it is known outside Belgium, to just die out. Their efforts to save the breed were fruitful, and the breed was first introduced to the USA during the 1930s were it is slowly gaining a reputation as impressive farmworkers.

Personality

This is a versatile dog that is even-tempered and gentle. It is protective but capable of determining real from imagined threats. These Belgian cattle dogs are also known to be courageous and intelligent, making them fine to have children as home pets.

Bred For

Everyday tasks for the Belgian working class from farmers, butchers, cattle raisers and merchants.

Environment

Bouvier des Flandres will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. But homes with a large yard are preferred.

Grooming

Their coat requires a lot of grooming but if done religiously, they will be dogs that shed very little inside the house.

Training

They are easy to train and learn commands relatively quick. But training should be consistent and done with a positive tone.

Health

Autoimmune disorders, cancer, glaucoma, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism subaortic stenosis are some of the health problems prone to affect the Flanders Cattle Dog breed.

Exercise

These dogs are highly active and need sufficient exercise to have their energy levels stable and manageable. It requires going outdoors with their owners, with activities such as long, brisk walks every day, jogging, or running alongside a bike.
