History

The Boykin Spaniel is a relatively new breed, dating from the turn of the twentieth century. They were developed from a single stray dog, which was trained as a turkey and waterfowl dog. Breeds in its background include the Chesapeake Bay retriever, Pointer, Springer Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel and American Water Spaniel. These dogs were bred to work on boats, diving in and out of boats to flush and retrieve game.

Personality

The Boykin Spaniel is an intelligent, trainable dog. It loves to work and enjoys the water. It is good-natured and affectionate with great endurance and versatility.

Bred For

This is a dog created for the hunt! They were developed for small to medium games hunting as well as water flushing and retrieving.

Environment

The Boykin Spaniel will do okay in an apartment if it is adequately exercised. But a home that has a small yard would be ideal.

Grooming

Their coat which may get flat or curly requires attention twice a week to avoid coat matting.

Training

Naturally docile and very obedient, these traits match with their high intelligence makes it easy to train a Boykin Spaniel dog.

Health

Cataracts, hip dysplasia, poor temperament, skin allergies are the most common health problems seen on the Boykin Spaniel dog breed.

Exercise

They require a lot of daily exercise as these dogs is a natural working dog with high levels of energy. A long, brisk daily walk should be done. Occasional boating trips are highly recommended.
