Introduction

The Braque Dupuy is the modern recreation of the ancient and extinct breed known as the Braque du Puy.

This breed is a variety of French Braque dog breed. Among all the French Braque dogs which include the Braque, D’Ariege, Braque St. Germaine, Braque du Bourbonnais and Braque D’Auvergne breeds, the Braque Dupuy is the tallest. They are prized for their excellent gun dog skills of hunting tirelessly on wide-open terrains.

History

The modern Braque Dupuy is a recreation and revival of the old and original Braque du Puy dog breeds. This Braque-type dog is believed to have originated in Poitou, France during the 19th century. They were originally bred to hunt fast and perform tirelessly in lowlands, plains and other wide-open terrains. This breed is the result of crossing French Braques with the African greyhound called the Sloughi. Legends have it that they were named after the du Puy brothers who bred their Braque Francais dogs with the greyhounds that were brought to France from Africa by the French Legion. Today, this breed is known to be the no.1 rarest dog breed in the world. They are very rare even in France and believed to be below the 100 marks in terms of numbers.

Personality

The Braque Dupuy is the only Braque Francais dog variety that has greyhounds in their lineages. This makes them hunting dogs that are very agile and built for speed! Like the other Braques, they are known for having highly developed scenting skills. Overall, this very rare dog breed is very spirited, very fast and great scent trackers when on the job. At home, these dogs will be affectionate and great to have family pets or companions.

Braque du Puy dogs were specifically bred to be faster and agile like greyhounds and still retain its scent tracking capabilities.

Environment

Braque du Puy is not suitable for city living and requires a rural environment to thrive.

Grooming

Braque du Puy are types of Braque Francais dogs that are known to be very easy to groom.

Training

Like other Braque-type dogs, the Braque du Puy breed is highly trainable

Health

Braque du Puy dogs are naturally healthy pointing dogs. There are no known specific diseases that have been documented for this breed.

Exercise

Braque du Puy requires daily exercise. These dogs should be taken on long daily walks. It is recommended to take them for weekly hunting trips.
