Introduction

Braque Francais are first and foremost versatile hunting dogs who are considered to be one of the oldest type’s gun dogs that use the pointing technique to locate the small to medium game during a hunt. There are two variants of the Braque Francais dog breed, the larger Gascogne variety and much more compact Pyrenean.

History

Origins of the Braque Francais dog breed can be traced in the southwest regions of France and the Central Pyrenees. It is one of France’s oldest pointing dogs, going as far back as the seventeenth century. There are two types, the Gascogne and the Pyrenean. The Pyrenean is more popular and considered to be closer to the original Braque Francais. The Gascogne variety is 22 to 27 inches in height and weighs 55 to 70 pounds. Whilst the Pyrenean is smaller, standing at 18.5 to 23 inches and just weighing 39.5 to 55 pounds. The two also differ when it comes to their coats; the Gascogne has this thick coat while the Pyrenean has this finer and shorter coating.

Personality

The two types of Braque Francais, may it be the Gascogne or the Pyrenean is gentle and easy-going dogs. They enjoy working and are intelligent and eager to please. The Braque Francais is known to be very sensitive and emotional, so positive training is highly recommended.

Bred For

Hunting small to medium game animals and uses the pointing technique to help their masters find the prey.

Environment

This dog breed is not suitable for city living and requires a rural environment to thrive.

Grooming

Both types of Braque Francais are easy to groom and requires minimal grooming maintenance.

Training

Highly trainable! Training these dogs is easy and fast.

Health

These are naturally healthy pointing dogs. There are no known specific diseases that have been documented for this breed.

Exercise

Daily exercise is required and deemed important. A long daily walk and weekly hunting trips are highly recommended.
