History

The Brazilian Terrier or Terrier Brasileiro is a dog breed that originates in Brazil. The precise historical records of this breed’s origin are unknown but they are believed to be several hundred years old as a breed. The Brazilian Terrier was only registered as a distinct breed in 1973. The lineage of this terrier-type breed is a blend of crosses between various dog breeds that were brought by European settlers and native Brazilian dogs. The strongest lineages on the Brazilian Terrier’s bloodline are from the Jack Russell Terrier and the Fox Terrier. It is believed that they also have Miniature Pinscher blood in them. They were bred to meet the needs of having a terrier breed that can effectively work on Brazil’s terrain and weather conditions.

Personality

Brazilian Terriers are your typical terrier-type dogs that behave and act like big terriers in a small dog’s body. They are naturally energetic and have strong work and prey drive. This Brazilian terrier-type is an intelligent dog much like other terriers. They are keen and assertive while at work and will be very loyal when around their family.

Brazilian Terriers were originally bred to meet the needs of having a terrier breed that can effectively work on Brazil’s terrain and weather conditions.

Environment

Grooming

Brazilian Terriers require very low grooming needs. Their short coat is easy to manage and only needs to be brushed once a week. They are terrier dogs that shed hair in medium amounts.

Unlike most terrier-type breeds, the Brazilian Terrier is obedient and intelligent and will not be difficult to train. They are more focused dogs compared to their European terrier cousins.

Health

The Brazilian Terrier dog breed is considered as one of the healthiest dog breeds coming out of the South American continent.

Exercise

Brazilian Terriers are naturally very lively and will be restless and tireless! Their exercise needs can be quite demanding. These dogs should be given sufficient physical and mental activities regularly. Taking these dogs on long walks every day is not just recommended, it is required for these dogs!
