Introduction

The Briard is a large powerful dog with a large, broad head that is well-covered with hair It has a double coat with a coarse, shaggy outer coat. They used to be in a single breed with the Beauceron, only separated in 1863 as clear distinctions were made between the two dog breeds. Sheepdogs with longer coats became the Briards, while short-coated sheepdogs became the Beauceron.

History

The Briard is an ancient breed that is believed to date back to the eighth century. It was developed as a flock guardian and herding dog and was also used as a military dog in both World War I and World War II. Famous historical figures such as Charlemagne, Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette, and Napoleon are just some reputed to have owned Briards. The first Briards in the United States are said to have arrived with Thomas Jefferson.

Personality

Briard dogs are intelligent, loyal, and obedient. They are affectionate and playful with friends and family. But expect these dogs to wary with strangers. It has a strong herding instinct, and sometimes this would show, as some dogs of this breed may feel compelled to their children, people or other pets.

Bred For

Originally they were bred to be flock guardians and herders. Today the Briard is known for being great companion dogs and some are search and rescue, police and military dogs.

Environment

The Briard will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They should not be put into life in a kennel type of living.

Grooming

Two hours a week to groom the Briard’s goat’s coat like coating would be required. If well attended to, these dogs will shed very little.

Training

Having these dogs poorly handled and trained should be avoided as they would become aggressive.

Health

Bloat, eye problems and hip dysplasia are some of the most common ailments that the Briard is known to be prone to.

Exercise

Working dogs like the Briard need an ample amount of exercise. If they don’t get it, these dogs will become restless, high strung and have a strong tendency to develop unwanted behavioral issues. Long daily walks or running and jogging are activities that are highly recommended.
