Introduction

A breed that was nearly eradicated by World War I and II, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen was considered to be one of the rarest dog breeds a couple of decades back. Fortunately, their numbers are on the rise and this medium-size griffon will still amaze us with its uncanny tracking skills!

History

Although a number of breeds once had briquet, meaning “medium-size”, in their names, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog breed is the last of them. It was bred to hunt large and small game in a pack, bred down from the brand Griffon Vendeen at the beginning of the twentieth century. The breed came to close to extinction during both world wars; it was revitalized in the late 1940s.

Personality

The Medium-Size Griffon Vendeen is an active, intense and enthusiastic dog. This breed is known to be single-minded when it has caught a scent! They are also known as natural hunting dogs showing exemplary passion. This trait together with their high stamina and fortitude while on the hunt, can pick up even in the coldest trail, makes them one of the best hunting dogs breeds every known.

Bred For

They were originally bred to be hunting dogs.

Environment

They are not that suitable for apartment living. A home with a large-sized yard that is fenced would make them happy.

Grooming

The dog’s double coat must be groomed by brushing and combing regularly.

Training

Training the griffons would be not difficult for their natural instinct to follow their master’s orders.

Health

The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is impressive when it comes to the health department. There are no known health problems, major or minor, that has been indicated to affect this breed.

Exercise

Owners of Briquet Griffon Vendéen dogs should devote time for outdoor activities. They are hunting dogs by instinct and will require lots of exercise and space to satisfy their high energy levels.
