A fighter by creation, the intimidating Bull Terrier, both Standard and Miniature have come a long way from their bloody roots as agile dogfighters and ferocious bull bating combatants. They can be quite a looker, with these dogs’ muscular stance and that distinctive egg-shaped head and chinito eyes!

History

Historical accounts of the Bull Terrier as a dog breed shows violence in their past. They are fierce pit fighting dogs who were bred for their gameness. Before being pit fighters, they were originally developed for the blood sports known as bull baiting. This is where they got the Bull in their name. Credit for the dog breed’s creation goes to James Hinks. Hinks established a serious breeding program for the Bull Terrier in the year 1835. To produce the Bull Terrier dogs, he crossed Spanish Pointers with the now-extinct white English Terrier.

Personality

The Bull Terrier is friendly, playful and affectionate with humans. It is a good guard and very lively and busy. It may be aggressive toward other animals so a lot of socialization should be done. If not well socialized, it can be food and toy possessive and reactive to provocation. Socialized Bull Terriers do fine with children and small animals, but two males generally will not get along.

Bred For

Pit fights and bull baiting. Today they are excellent guard dogs, watchdogs and companions for the right dog owner.

Environment

Bull Terriers will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. These are dogs suitable for warm climates.

Grooming

The Bull Terrier is easy to groom and is an average shedder.

Training

This breed needs very firm training and not suitable for all households and dog owners. Supervision even when fully trained is recommended.

Health

Deafness, heart problems, renal problems, skin allergies, spinning disorder are the most common health issues faced by the Bull Terrier dog breed in recent years.

Exercise

This breed needs vigorous daily exercise, which includes a daily, long walk. Not meeting their exercise requirements will cause obesity as the Standard Bull Terrier has a tendency to become overweight.
