Adopt a Bulldog, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

Originating from the British Isles, Bulldogs are the descendants of the mastiffs from the Far East. The dog breed’s name comes from the blood sports were it was created to excel at, bull baiting. They also got their name from that famous physical appearance, robust like a miniature bull! Although these ancient bulldog ancestors are known to be aggressive, powerful and ferocious while combating bulls, today’s Bulldogs are more docile and friendly in nature.

History

Historically, the modern Bulldog breed is far from being similar to early Bulldogs where they came from. Early Bulldog types are utilized by butchers to hold bulls before being slaughtered. From being a butcher’s helper, these bulldogs eventually became bull baiting pit fighters. This only stopped when the blood sport was banned and outlawed in the year 1835. Today, modern bulldogs are bred to maintain the distinctive intimidating appearance and very docile temperament towards their human owners. Breeders no longer breed them for their gameness and pit fighting talents.

Personality

Modern Bulldogs will always be a bit scrappy with other dogs, especially if they are males. But they are also very stable and show admirable gentleness and care when around its family. Known to be full of courage and possessing great strength, these dogs are also known to be messy home pets. Messy because these dogs are heavy droolers. They can also be an earful, as Bulldogs are known to be loud snorers and can pass gas loudly.

Bred For

Originally used for the blood sports that is bull baiting. The Bulldogs of today are not as ferocious and aggressive as their ancestors and are known to be great companion pets.

Environment

They can adapt to any living environment may it be city, suburban, rural or apartment living conditions. But The English Bulldog is considered to be ideal for apartment life.

Grooming

This breed’s grooming needs are quite easy but maybe tiresome as they are known to be heavy droolers. The wrinkles on their face need regular cleaning as well. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Having them on an early training regiment is a must as older bulldogs can be very stubborn.

Health

Bulldogs are one of the dog breeds that suffer a lot of health problems all through their lives. These dogs are prone to suffer allergies of all types, eyesight related problems, deformities such as having soft or cleft palates, reproductive system related diseases as well as having the brachycephalic syndrome. These dogs are also prone to heat strokes and require special attention when in hot climates.

Exercise

The Bulldog needs to be taken on a daily walk as these type of dogs have a compulsive longing to move.
