Introduction

The Bullmastiff can be called the wrestlers or “grapplers” of the dog world for their strength and ability to track down, take down and pink intruders! These giant dogs will have target down on the ground until their master’s arrival! Now that’s what you call a guard dog!

History

In its early days, the Bullmastiff had been more commonly called as the gamekeeper’s night dog. The dog breed had been created during the 1860s. Innovator breeders made the contemporary Bullmastiff breed by crossing the Mastiff and also the Bulldog. It had been selectively bred to capture and also keep poachers without the need of injuring these people. Breeders considered crosses that would produce a faster, stronger but not necessarily an aggressive type of mastiff. The breed standards mention that the initial mating had been sixty percent Mastiff and 40 percent Bulldog.

Personality

Bullmastiffs are naturally territorial and will always be protective. This is because they were bred to capture intruders and poachers. But the Bullmastiff has a lighter side. They are very docile and quiet when around family. When children are present, these dogs will be patient, tolerant and gentle with them.

Bred For

Originally to be the gamekeeper’s dog that is tasked to track down, takedown and pin poachers. Today they are excellent watchdogs and property guardians.

Environment

Bullmastiffs will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. This breed cannot tolerate too hot or too cold climate conditions.

Grooming

These dogs have short-haired with a slightly rough coat that is easy to groom. There is a little shedding.

Training

Positive training should be done, but training Bullmastiffs is not that difficult.

Health

Bloat, eye problems, cardiac disease, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, kidney problems, panosteitis, tumors are some of the most common health issues to affect the Bullmastiff dog breed. Obesity is this breed’s main problem, so having their feeding session supervised is highly recommended.

Exercise

Bullmastiffs need to be taken on a daily walk even though they show low activity levels.
