History

Cão dos Mourey is a dog breed that originated in Brazil and is one of the youngest mastiff breeds known today, having developed in the early part of 1975. This Brazilian breed is considered to be one of the largest dog breeds in the world today. It is bred from the English banddog family and was developed using various terriers, bulldogs and mastiffs in its foundation stock. The Cão dos Mourey was specifically developed to be an efficient working class mastiff that is similar to a Brazilian dog breed that became popular before the 20th century. It has inherited the traits of all its progenitors and known to be a full-blooded working dog for Brazil’s rural working class.

Personality

Cão dos Mourey is a dog that inherited various traits from its various ancestors. They are tenacious, feisty and independent, similar to their Bulldog forefathers. They are confident, dominant, extremely trainable and hard workers, inhering these traits of their Mastiff ancestors. These dogs are also energetic and often predatory much like their Terrier progenitors. Overall they are hardworking dogs that will be devoted and very protective to their family and very aloof towards strangers.

The Cão dos Mourey were specifically developed to be an efficient working class mastiff.

Environment

The Cão dos Mourey can adapt to city life and can be good apartment pets provided that their exercise needs are sufficiently met. These dogs will be calm indoors. They do need to be taken out for walks every day to stay this way if kept as indoor pets. These dogs will enjoy running around a large yard that is suitably fenced.

Grooming

The Cao Dos Mourey requires moderate grooming maintenance. These dogs should have their coats brushed three times a week. These are large dogs that shed hair in the average amount.

Training

The Cão dos Mourey can be properly and well trained provided that a firm but gentle training method is used. It is advisable to have them trained during their puppyhood stage.

Health

Cão dos Mourey shows no major or minor health problems that commonly affect other dog breeds. Their large size may cause to these dogs to develop hip dysplasia, it is not common but may occur.

Exercise

Cão dos Mourey are dogs that will require ample time for play and exercise sessions in the form of walks every day.
