Introduction

The Caravan Hound has two coat varieties. The Smooth-coated variety is generally called Caravan Hounds. The feathered coated variety is called the Pashmi Hound.

History

The Caravan Hound is considered to be one of the ancient dog breeds that still exist today. This is a breed that originates in India’s Deccan Plateau, covering a vast area that includes the Indian States of Maharashtra and Karnataka with portions of Andhra Pradesh State. These dogs are similar to Saluki dogs. It is believed that Caravan Hounds were kept by Asian traders, using them as traveling companions and guard dogs to their trade caravan. They were also used in hunting by these mobile traders.

The breed got its name from the local Indian word of “Karwani” that roughly translates to dogs of the caravans. This is because these dogs were often seen running alongside the caravan of their merchant masters. Officially, they are registered as the Caravan Hound breed, but it is also called as the Mudhol Hound in some parts of India. This refers to Sri Srimanth Raja Malojirao Gorphade, the ruler of the Mudhol people who gave a pair of this breed to King George V as a gift. The British monarch was impressed with the dogs and found it as very efficient sighthounds, naming them The Hounds of Mudhol. A variety of this Indian dog breed is also called as the Pashmi Hound. These are Caravan Hounds that have feathered fur and commonly bred in India’s Pashmi region.

Personality

The Caravan Hound is highly intelligent and known to be keen hunters. They will display reservations towards strangers. These dogs are aloof and will not like being touched by other people other than their master. The Caravan Hound is an independently minded dog breed that is famous for its capable skills in protecting their human family and property.

Bred For

Caravan Hounds was bred to be hunting, guarding and companion dogs in the Deccan Plateau of India.

Environment

The Caravan Hound should not be kept as apartment dogs. They will not do well in the city. These are dogs that will thrive in homes that have a large and well-fenced yard. They are naturally bred to be outdoor dogs and will prefer tropical climates.

Grooming

The Caravan Hounds with the smooth coat requires no grooming attention. The Pashmi variety will require brushing of their feathered fur at least once a week. These are dogs that shed hair in the average amount.

Training

The Caravan Hounds can be well trained provided they are trained using a firm, consistent and gently method. They will be responsive especially if their trainers are patient.

Health

The Caravan Hound is an ancient breed that underwent a natural selective breeding process entailing the survival of the fittest lines of this breed. They are very healthy dogs.

Exercise

Caravan Hounds are natural sighthounds, a dog group that requires a tremendous amount of activities to sufficiently satisfy their exercise requirements. These are dogs that should be taken on long walks every day. They should also be given time to run in a large and fenced area at least once a week.
