History

Catahoula Cur is one of the cur breeds that originated in the areas known as the American South. This breed was first bred in the State of Louisiana. The State is known today as part of the Gulf Coast. But prior to the American Civil War, Louisiana was in an integral part of America’s Old South or Dixie region. They are known to be the descendants of the crosses between various European hound and terrier breeds that were brought by early settlers and pioneers and with the native dogs of the North American continent. The Catahoula Cur was specifically bred to meet the needs of Louisiana’s pioneers who wanted a well-rounded hunting dog that can hunt in packs can also be versatile working dogs.

Personality

The Catahoula Cur is dominant by nature. They are known to be dog-aggressive and will show the same aggression towards strangers if not supervised. They will display a lighter side and will be affectionate and playful when around family.

Bred For

Catahoula Cur was bred to be an all-purpose dog that can be versatile hunters and dependable working dogs that can herd, guard flocks and do watchdog duties in the State of Louisiana.

Environment

Catahoula Cur is not ideal to be kept as apartment dogs. These cur-type dogs prefer warm weather conditions and will suffer in cold climates.

Grooming

Catahoula Curs are dogs that will not need special attention when it comes to grooming. These dogs have coats that are low maintenance. They are dogs that shed hair on average or little amounts but will do so constantly.
