Introduction

Porcelaine dogs are lean, fine-boned, medium-sized dogs with a finely chiseled head with a coat that is very smooth, short and fine. Their official name is Chien de Française-Comte but is more popularly known as the Chien Française.

History

Although there is some confusion as to whether the Porcelaine is a French or Swiss breed, it is believed to be the oldest of the French scent hounds. It may have been developed from the English Harrier and Swiss Laufhunds. It was used to hunt small game and is rarely found outside France, Switzerland and Italy.

Personality

Although it is a fierce and enthusiastic hunter, the Porcelain dogs are gentle and easygoing at home. It gets along with almost everyone, including children and other dogs. It is vocal and independent-minded. The Porcelain dog breed does best with an active family in a rural home as they can be in their natural state.

Bred For

Used for hunting hare and roe deer in packs

Environment

The Porcelaine is not recommended for apartment life.

Grooming

The glossy white coat is easy to care for.

Training

Highly trainable and a quick learner.

Health

The Chien Française dog breed has no serious health issues and is believed to be generally healthy.

Exercise

This breed needs a lot of exercises, including a daily, long, brisk walk or jog.
