Introduction

Archaeologists have found the remains of purported Chihuahua ancestors in human graves in Mexico and areas of the southwest United States. The breed called Techichi, was kept as a companion and for religious purposes among the ancient Toltecs and Aztecs. The Chihuahua is a very small dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. There are two coat types for this breed: long-haired and smooth. Longhaired types of dogs have soft, flat or slightly curly, usually with an undercoat. The smooth variety has soft, glossy, straight hair.

History

The history of the Chihuahua is vague. It is known that both the Toltec and Aztec cultures kept dogs, including a small breed called the Techichi, but it is uncertain whether these dogs were the ancestors of the Chihuahua. Some fanciers believe it is a descendant of dogs introduced by Chinese or Spanish explorers. It was first seen by North Americans in the mid-nineteenth century and brought to the United States shortly thereafter.

Personality

The Chihuahua is an alert sensitive dog. It tends to dislike dogs of other breeds and requires socialization to be comfortable with strangers and children.

Bred For

Religious reasons by the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. Today they are one of the prized companion pets in the Toy Dog world.

Environment

These are good little dogs for apartment life.

Grooming

Once a month bathing is required. The smooth, short-haired coat should be gently brushed occasionally or simply wiped over with a damp cloth. The long coat should be brushed daily with a soft bristle brush. This breed is an average shredder.

Training

These small dogs are slightly difficult to train, but they will learn quickly and respond well to positive and gentle training.

Health

Collapses Trachea, heart problems, hydrocephalic, hypoglycemia, luxating patellas are some of the most common health problems that may affect the Chihuahua.

Exercise

These are active little dogs that need a daily walk. Chihuahuas are not meant to be carried around in a bag. They are little dogs who need lots of exercises. These dogs will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard.
