The Chinese Chongqing Dog is considered to be very unique for its appearance, appearing like a dog that was a result of crossing the Thai Ridgeback and the typical Bulldog, but with a very distinctive coat, color and tail compared to the two dog breeds mentioned.

History

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is considered to be among the ancient dog breeds that still exist today. This Asian dog breed originated in the China’s City of Chongqing and is believed to be more than 2,000 years old with historical accounts dating back as far as the Han Dynasty. These dogs were originally bred and kept for hunting large to small game animals including wild boars and rabbits. Later on, this dog breed evolved to be guard dogs that are reliable defenders of property and homes and protectors of their human family.

It is one of the rarest dogs today, nearly decimated in 1949 when the Mao led Cultural Revolution broke out which eventually gave way to the creation of the People’s Republic of China. Presently, Chinese Chongqing Dogs are only kept by rural residents in China.

Personality

The ancient and very rare Chongqing Dog is known to be a dog that displays an air of nobility, dignity and intelligence. They are great around children, displaying respect and tolerance towards kids of all ages. These dogs are natural watchdogs that are very alert. This is a dog that will use their intelligence when guarding their family and property. They will be aloof towards strangers, displaying a heightened sense of alertness and will make its presence known. But once their owners show that the strangers can be trusted and friendly, the Chongqing Dog will treat it as visitors that pose no threat. This is a Chinese dog breed that is fearless, muscular and very powerful.

Chongqing Dogs were originally bred and kept for hunting large to small game animals including wild boars and rabbits. Later on, this dog breed evolved to be guard dogs.

Environment

The Chongqing Dog will be good apartment pets provided that they are sufficiently exercised. In the United States, strict rules of not allowing the sale of these dogs to people who are living in an apartment are followed.

Grooming

The Chongqing Dog will not require a lot of grooming attention.

Training

The Chongqing Dog naturally evolved from being hunting dogs to guard dogs for families and property. This makes them independent and willful. These traits pose problems to non-experienced dog owners and trainers when training these dogs. They are trainable but require a dominant, very experienced dog handler to have them properly trained.

Health

The Chongqing Dog has this unique coat that is very short and considered sparse. This will result in high risks of developing various skin problems. To prevent this, it is advisable to have these dogs on a strict premium diet. Aside from the skin-related medical issues. the Chongqing Dog is very healthy.

Exercise

The Chongqing Dog is also demanding when it comes to their exercise requirements. These are dogs that should be given vigorous exercise every day and done at least 30 minutes for every session.
