Introduction

The Chinese Crested is a small, fine-boned body. It comes in two varieties: the Hairless and the powderpuff. The Hairless variety has hair only on its head, feet and tails. The Powderpuff is completely covered in long hair.

History

During the year 200 B.C.E. when China was ruled by the Han Dynasty, villagers of Tai Li the Chinese province of Guangdong, an ancient dog breed was used as an all-purpose dog. They serviced villagers as a utility, guarding and companion dogs. Historical records and artifacts about these ancient Chinese dogs bear very similar traits and appearances to the contemporary Shar-Pei. Proof of this is an ancient manuscript dating back from the 13th Century which writes about a domesticated dog that has wrinkles all over its body. Today, the Shar-Pei has shown resiliency as a dog breed. They survived near extinction and turned into one of the world’s most famous companion pets. Shar-Pei although considered as one breed, comes in two varieties: the Short Coated Shar-Pei and the Longer Coated Shar-Pei.

Personality

Chinese Shar-Peis are dogs that will choose the company of humans than other dogs. They are dog-aggressive if not properly trained. Trained dogs will be aloof when around other dogs as well. Around family, these wrinkled Chinese dogs are known to show affection and devotion. When around strangers, they will show wariness. All in all, the Shar-Pei dog breed possesses intelligence that is higher than most other breeds. These serious and always alert dogs are one of China’s most loved and most popular companion pets around the world today.

Bred For

Various purposes from vermin hunters on ships, bed warmers and food source, to rare breed dog show contenders.

Environment

Good for apartment life. The Hairless Chinese Crested should wear sweaters in cold climate areas.

Grooming

Chinese Crested is very clean, with no doggie odor. Powderpuff need a lot more grooming. The Hairless variety requires very minimal grooming attention.

Training

Socialization and training should be done early and firmly.

Health

Some of the health issues concerning the two varieties of Chinese Crested dogs are Dental Problems, Legg-Pethers disease, liver shunts and PRA.

Exercise

These are active little dogs that need a daily walk and are not meant to be carried in a bag.
