Introduction

The Chinese Imperial Dog used to be classified as a breed that just a variety of the well-known breed Shih-Tzu. However, it is now recognized by various kennel clubs to be a separate and distinct breed.

The Chinese Imperial Dogs are playful, loving and very loyal to their owners. However, sometimes they can be very stubborn. In addition, they are not very loud but will alert you when someone is coming.

History

The Chinese Imperial Dog breed originates in China in 700 A.D. This breed used to be classified as a smaller variety of Shih-Tzu dogs. However,  it was recognized as a separate and distinct breed from the Shih-Tzu until 2005.

The main difference between the two toy Chinese dogs is their size. The Shih-Tzu can grow up 11 inches tall and weigh up to 16 pounds. The Chinese Imperial Dog is relatively smaller, growing only up to 9 inches tall and weighing less than 9 pounds!

The Chinese Imperial Dog was originally bred inside the confines of the Imperial Palace as companion pets for Chinese royalty. Their main function was to serve as the Emperor’s official foot warmer. Later on, these small dogs became popular with the nobility, carrying these very small dogs in the sleeves of their silk robes!

Personality

Chinese Imperial Dogs are natural family pets and personal companions. They are very tiny dogs that will be energetic and playful. This tiny toy dog breed enjoys being a lapdog, lying quietly and contently once on it’s master’s lap.

However, don’t be fooled by their size. Their overall physique is built on a sturdy frame. In addition, these dogs can also be vivacious and may sometime show a streak of independence, but these tiny dogs will always show cooperation.

The Chinese Imperial Dog was originally bred to be companions for Chinese royalty. The Emperor of China used them as foot warmers while the Chinese nobility used them as a status symbol, carrying these very small dogs on the sleeves of their silk robes.

Environment

The Chinese Imperial Dog is the ideal companion pet. These tiny dogs are indoor pets that will adapt to any type of living environment, whether in the city, suburbs or rural areas. In addition, these dogs are also the best breed of choice for apartment dwellers!

Grooming

Chinese Imperial Dog is somewhat demanding when it comes to grooming. These tiny dogs should have their coats trimmed at least once a month. Also, they are one of the few dog breeds that should be regularly clipped and occasionally bathed.

Training

Chinese Imperial Dog may not be the most intelligent toy dog breed, but their eagerness to please people makes it a trouble-free dog when it comes to training.

Health

Chinese Imperial Dogs are very small, even for a toy dog. Therefore, they are susceptible to hypoglycemia, which is mainly brought by having small bodies. In addition, because of their long back and short legs, they are prone to slipped stifle and spinal disc disease.

Also, their owner should pay attention to their ears and eyes because they are known to suffer from infections.

Exercise

Chinese Imperial Dogs are so small, most owners assume that these dogs have very little activity needs or none at all. This is because this toy dog is famous for enjoying lounging on couches or just warming it’s master’s lap for hours on end. However, they are still dogs and taking them out for walks every two days will curb their natural canine instincts and benefit their overall health.
