The Chinook is a medium to a large-size, powerful dog that is longer than it is tall. They have a dense double coating covering their entire bodies.

History

In 1917, a northern breed was first developed using the result of crossing a Saint Bernard and a Greenland Husky. The puppy was named Chinook. This particular puppy was the single progenitor of the modern Chinook breed which was named after it. Chinook’s litter, each and every one of them acquired the same coat color, physique and level of intelligence. This young Nordic dog breed became popular internationally during the year 1929. This is when Admiral Byrd used Chinook and several of his offspring as his official sledding dogs on his Antarctic Expedition. These dogs set sledding records in several categories. Holding mushing records in the unforgiving Antarctic terrain and climate in speed, weight pulled and distance. The original progenitor of the modern Chinook’s died in the expedition. But the dog’s lineage carries on. They nearly became extinct during the ’80s, numbering to only 11 at the time. Today they are one of the rarest dogs but their numbers are gradually increasing.

Personality

Chinooks are dogs that have proven ideal around other animals and children of all ages. Around family, this northern breed will show loyalty, friendliness and impressive calmness. Around strangers, they will be reserve, but never aggressive. Their high intelligence, versatile skills and alertness were the reason Admiral Byrd chose them for his record-breaking Antarctic expedition.

Environment

Chinooks make fine apartment dogs so long as the owner makes a commitment to regular exercise and walking.

Grooming

The coat of the Chinook practically takes care of itself and requires little to no grooming. This northern dog breed sheds very little.

Training

Chinooks are easily trained if positive reinforcements are used.

Health

Cataracts, cryptorchidism, dysplasia, seizures, shyness and skin problems are the top most common ailments seen on this dog breed.

Exercise

Chinooks require moderate exercise and are not hyper dogs. Daily walks should be done with your Chinook.
