History

The Cirneco dell’Etna is a dog breed that originates on the island of Sicily, Italy. This is a small-sized hound breed that was used by Sicilians as hunting dogs of small games, specifically rabbits and hares. They are often called Sicilian Hounds or Greyhounds outside of Italy, as this is the rough English translation of the breed’s official name. It is widely used throughout Sicily, particularly within the region that surrounds the Mount Etna Volcano. Their isolation within the Sicilian Island makes this breed’s bloodlines particularly pure and untouched. They are also the only hunting dog known to have adapted to hunt on rough terrain which was formed by volcanic lava. Harsh life in the Sicilian islands also made these dogs very adaptive and can hunt in very hot temperatures for hours without food and water!

Personality

Cirneco dell’Etna is a dog breed known to be a very keen hunter that is capable of going after prey using their sound, scent and sight! This Sicilian hound breed is adaptable when hunting in difficult terrain. They are so adaptive to rugged terrain, that these dogs are the only known hunting dog breed to hunt on terrain that was naturally formed by a volcanic lava flow from an active volcano. These are strong-willed dogs that will display alertness and excellent companion traits. This island hounds will be gentle and affectionate towards their family. Out on the field, they are dogs that will display strength, liveliness and an independent demeanor.

Bred For

The Cirneco dell’Etna was bred within the Island of Sicily in Italy as a very hardy hunting dog that can hunt using their eyes, noses and ears. They are also hunting dogs that can hunt for hours in very hot weather conditions without food and water.

Environment

Sicilian Hounds are naturally tropical island hunters that prefer warm climates and rugged terrain. They are rural dogs at heart.

Grooming

The Cirneco dell’Etna is considered to be a very low maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. These are dogs that will only require brushing once a week. This is a dog breed with a very thin coat, making them susceptible to all sorts of medical problems when kept in cold climates.

Training

Compared to other hound breeds, the Cirneco Dell ‘Etna is easier to train. It is advisable to train these dogs using short and innovative training methods to make it a very responsive student.

The Sicilian Hounds are one of Italy’s healthiest dog breeds.

Exercise

Cirneco Dell ‘Etna is medium and slender hunting dogs packed with enormous amounts of energy. It is advisable to take them on 30 minutes’ walk twice a day to satisfy their high activity requirements. It is also advisable to train these dogs for various sports including agility, obedience, lure coursing, tracking and rally trials to sufficiently satisfy their energy needs.
