Introduction

The Continental Toy Spaniel is a dog breed that has been a subject of debate among the various international kennel clubs. There are organizations, mostly Europeans, calling this breed officially as the Continental Toy Spaniel with two separate varieties. They are the erect-eared Papillon and the drop-eared Phalene. FCI calls the breed a Continental Toy Spaniel with two varieties:

• Papillon for the erect-eared dogs
• Phalene for the drop-eared dogs

Other kennels treat the two varieties as one single dog breed.

History

Continental Toy Spaniels can trace their origins in France during the 16th century. Some lines of these toy spaniels were developed in Belgium. They were bred-down from various large European spaniels. These dwarf spaniel dogs became famous among European royalty for their compact size and beauty that Maria Antoinette and Madame Pompadour were known to have several for companion pets.

Personality

Small, clean and beautiful! That is what the Continental Toy Spaniel is famous for, but they are also known to be very alert watchdogs! These toy spaniels are very vocal but not aggressive. They will display friendliness towards everyone they meet.

Bred For

Continental Toy Spaniels became famous during the 16th century as lapdogs of women of nobility and royalty.

Environment

They are toy spaniels that might not be the ideal apartment pet. These tiny dogs can get very loud and territorial in this type of living condition.

Grooming

Continental Toy Spaniels are toy dogs that require demanding grooming attention. They have this silky coat that will be very attractive if well maintained. These toy dogs are very clean and do not have dog odor. They are dogs that will shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Continental Toy Spaniels are very easy to housebreaking. They can be well-trained dogs but training should start early and firmly.

Health

The two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniels have the same medical history. Both types of this breed are plagued with alarming cases of kneecaps patella that can only be corrected with surgery. They are also among the few dogs known to have birth defects known as the fontanel. This genetic disease often causes death to puppies. Allergies to anesthesia have also been recorded with this breed.
