Introduction

The Coton de Tulear is a small, well-muscled dog. It has a cotton-like coat, for which it was named (coton is French for “cotton”).

History

The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon family and has always been a companion. Its ancestors are believed to have been brought to Madagascar 400 to 500 years ago. The breed named for the port city of Tulear was embraced by the Malagasy upper class and became known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar.

Only members of the nobility could own the breed. In 1973, a North American doctor came across the breed and brought the first Cotons to the United States in 1974. Although it is the official dog of Madagascar, it is close to extinction there.

Personality

The Coton is a cheerful, agreeable dog that gets along with almost everyone but especially bonded with its family. It is friendly with children, strangers, and other animals. It is playful and sometimes even clownish.

The Coton is good for apartment life and would be fine even if there is no yard in their living environment.

Grooming

The dog’s long, light-textured hair requires daily, careful grooming.

Training

These dogs can be a little bit stubborn during training. Proper leadership should be established.

Health

Amazingly, the Coton du Tulear is relatively very healthy which is a bit rare for small-sized dogs like this breed.

Exercise

Cotons like to swim and play and are just full of energy. These tiny dogs are excellent competitors in agility skill trials. If treated as home pets, they should be taken for long daily walks.
