History
The Cretan Hounds is a dog breed that originates in the Greek island of Crete and believed to be basically the same version of the primitive hunting dog that has been in existence for over 3,500 years. This ancient dog breed is documented to be widely used and developed by the Minoan civilization when their culture dominated the vast Aegean region. The Cretan Hounds or also called the Kressai Kynes or Kressa Kyon, Kritikos Ichnilatis and Kritikos Lagonikos, is a dog breed prized throughout the centuries to be excellent hunting dogs when it comes to hares and wild rabbits. These dogs were also prized for their capability to hunt on harsh and rugged terrain.

The Cretan Hounds is believed to be the descendants of the ancient dogs from Africa that were brought to the Island of Crete. This breed is also considered to have one of the purest bloodlines as they were isolated for centuries within their native island. They are dogs that rarely bred outside Crete and only exposed internationally on rare occasions when Cretan Hounds are invited to be exhibited in dog shows held in the city of Athens. This is the only time when foreigners have the opportunity to personally set their eyes on the dog world’s true living legends.

Personality
A very ancient dog breed that withstood centuries, the Cretan Hound is literally the dog world’s genuine living legend. They are hound dogs that bark rarely but will alert their masters when strangers are nearby. This breed is capable of hunting prey using both their eyes and their noses while out on the field. They are known to taste the scent, may it be scents caught on the ground or sniffed through the air. These dogs are so great as scent trackers, they are known to suck the scent out of the pebbles and stones while trailing their prey! They have a meek appearance and their show of affection towards their master will lead to an assumption that they are truly meek dogs. But Cretan Hounds are very deadly during the hunt, chasing prey with precision. They have a regal bearing, appearing with an aura of the aristocracy and elegant with its stance. These dogs are polite, gentle and very hygienic. They are inquisitive and tolerant when around strangers but will be great to have around children as well as other animals that are members of the family.

Bred For
Cretan Hounds were bred and prized throughout the centuries to be excellent hunting dogs when it comes to hares and wild rabbits. They are hunting dogs capable of performing in rugged terrain.

Environment
The Cretan Hound breed is not an apartment pet. It is advisable to have them in rural areas where they have ample space to run and move about. These dogs are also not recommended to have in homes with other dogs and other pet animals.

Grooming
The Cretan Hounds will only require occasional brushing of their coat. These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training
The Cretan Hound is very obedient and extremely eager to please their masters, making them highly trainable. These bright and intelligent dogs will be more responsive if trained using positive methods.

Health
The Cretan Hound is more than 3,500 years old that evolved to be one of the world’s healthiest dog breeds.

Exercise
The Cretan Hound will require plenty of exercise including taking them out for walks every day and running free in wide-open spaces at least once a week.
