History

The Cur is an all-American dog breed that was developed in various places across the region of the United States that are famously called as Rural America. Curs are the descendants of various terrier breeds and European mongrels and mixed breeds that were brought to the inland United States by European immigrants. These dogs adapted and competently serviced the needs of rural America, leading to a formal breeding program that resulted in various Cur dog varieties. Curs were and are still being bred to be all-purpose dogs for hunting games, watchdogs, livestock herders and guardians and even as companion pets.

Personality

In general, Curs are hardworking dogs that are naturally versatile working dogs. These all-purpose rural dogs are full of courage and tenacity when out doing their tasks

Bred For

Cur dogs are bred and developed for various purposes and considered to be all-around working dogs that are proficient as hunters, treeing dogs and baying. These dogs can hunt squirrels, raccoons, turkey, rabbit, hares, pheasant, opossum, boar, bobcats, bears, lions, grouse, coyote and more. Curs are also impressive livestock herders that are known to be great herding cattle, sheep and hogs. They are also known to round up escaped livestock that is considered rough stock, these are livestock that has gone feral such are feral pigs and cows.

Environment

Most Curs are not recommended to have as apartment pets. Some do adapt to this type of living conditions but require a lot of training. They are natural working dogs that will enjoy rural areas especially if they are given a regular job.

Grooming

Cur-type dogs are very easy to groom and require little attention as they are naturally clean and most are covered with short-haired coats. In general, Curs are very low maintenance when it comes to grooming needs.

Training

Cur dogs are working dogs that will be hard to train in obedience and housebreaking. They are natural working dogs trained to work and perform.

Health

Most Curs are very healthy with no known genetic anomalies, deformities or tendencies to affect them. Some are known to have minor health problems from eye issues and the common hip dysplasia.

Exercise

Curs are dogs that are very active and addictive to hard work. These dogs should be given a regular farm job that will naturally satisfy their high activity requirements. When not working, they should be taken on long walks and running every day.
