History

Portuguese fishing men have been using the Curly-coated and Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog varieties as a working fisherman’s companion for several centuries now. These dogs were bred and used as fish gatherers, catchers and herders as well and fishing line and net retrievers. The Cao de Aqua Pelo Encaradolado is also impressive working as aquatic messengers, delivering messages and messages from one boat to another.

Personality

The Portuguese Water Dog is a working dog breed that is known to be bright and well-behaved. These dogs are famous for their extraordinary staying power and stamina. They are also dogs known for showing fantastic dedication towards the family. These dogs got their name for nothing, the Curly-coated Cao de Agua lives to work and play in the water!

Bred For

The Cao de Agua Pelo Encaradolado was developed as a working dog by Portuguese fishermen. They were bred to be fish herders and catchers, aquatic retrievers, boat messengers and guard dogs of boats at the port.

Environment

The Curly-coated Portuguese Water Dog can be kept as apartment pets. Provided that their owners meet these dogs’ exercise needs sufficiently satisfied.

Grooming

The Curly-coated Portuguese Water dog requires regular and weekly grooming attention. They are dogs that shed hair in little amounts to none at all. These are also hypoallergenic dogs suitable for people with allergic reactions to canine hair.

Training

Curly-coated Portuguese Water Dogs are known to be very smart and very obedient with a remarkable eagerness to please their handlers. These traits make them one of the easiest and most highly trainable dog breeds known today.

Health

The Portuguese Water Dogs and its two-coat variety are dogs that are known for being healthy. There are only three alarming medical conditions that are known to commonly plagued these dogs and they are Hip dysplasia, PRA or progressive retinal atrophy and the fatal nerve disease known as GM-1 Storage Disease.

Exercise

Curly-coated Portuguese Water Dogs are natural aquatic working dogs. Taking them on long and brisk walks and swimming at least once a week is recommended!
