Introduction

Back in the day, Curly-Coated Retriever dogs are synonymous to the working class. English commoners, mostly gamekeepers are likely to own these types of dogs. Thus garnering the nick, “the gamekeeper’s night watchdog”. This is a dog breed famous for being excellent hunters, trackers, retrievers as well as skilled guardians and watchdogs, the Curly Coated Retriever who is also gaining popularity in the dog agility and obedience competition circuits, is considered to be one of the oldest retriever breeds today.

History

The dog breed’s precise origin and development are quite unclear. But most believe that by the late eighteenth century, English dogs of these types are being bred for retrieval during hunting trips. They were mainly bred to retrieve waterfowls and upland game birds. Most agree that early developers of this dog breed crossed several lines of Irish Water Spaniels, Poodles, Saint John’s Newfoundland dogs as well as Old English Water-Dog. It has been a well-known dog breed all across Great Britain, New Zealand and the continent of Australia. In the USA, these dogs have not yet hit mainstream consciousness.

Personality

The Curly Coated Retriever is a dog breed that knows to be affectionate around friends and family, but still remain reserved around strangers. They are playful dogs that are full of energy and just adore the company of children. Like most retrievers, they are adaptable, following its owners activity phase how high or low it can be.

Bred For

Waterfowl, upland game retrieval are the original purpose. Today they are used in competitive obedience and agility contests, companions and therapy dogs

Environment

Curly-Coated Retriever dogs are not apartment pets. They will love homes with at least a large yard. Spacious outdoor land and water venues are highly recommended.

This dog requires minimal grooming.

Highly intelligent and easily trainable.

Health

Alopecia, cancer, eye problems, hip and elbow dysplasia are the most common health problems facing the Curly-Coated Retriever dog breed.

Exercise

This is a dog that is packed with high-energy that matches its high level of intelligence. They must have sufficient exercise that will fit their mental and physical prowess. As retriever dogs, they will love aquatic activities as well as the occasional outdoor hunting expedition. Brisk daily long walks or jogging is a must!
