History

1928 was the year that the Dogo Argentino dog breed was first developed in South America. The dog breeds first fancier was an Argentinean physician who is fond of big game hounds that excel in big game hunting. His name was Dr. Antionio Nores Martinez and his efforts to find a strong and efficient hunting dog fit enough to hunt wild boars and even pumas created the Argentine Dogo. Dr. Martinez crossed mastiffs, bulldogs, bull terriers as well as the old fighting dogs of Cordoba and shaped the breed to have all the positive traits of each breed, with lesser aggression.

Personality

The Dogo Argentino is a reliable dog that is affectionate with friends and family but wary with strangers. It is intelligent and likes to be the center of attention. It is highly trainable and generally enjoys children.

Bred For

Originally as a big game hunting dog. They are also used as guardians, watchdogs, police and military service dogs, companions for the blind.

Environment

This breed will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. Homes with an average-sized yard will make them happy.

Grooming

Dogo Argentino dogs have coats that are short and smooth, which is relatively very easy to take care of. They are average shedders.

Training

These are highly intelligent dogs that are easy to train as long as trainers are consistent but still loving in approach.

Health

Although strong and muscular, the Dogo Argentino dog breed is prone to deafness, hip dysplasia and shows sensitivity to prolonged sun exposure.

Exercise

This Argentine dog breed requires lots of exercises. Daily long walks or jogging sessions should be done.
