Introduction

Dogue de Bordeaux is a dog breed that has a very colorful past. They trace their roots to the warrior dogs used by the Ancient Roman Legion when they conquered Gaul; these dogs also served cattle drivers and became famous for being great bodyguards for their guarding and watchdog skills. They saw near extinction during the French Revolution. Strong enough to hunt down bears, jaguars and wild boars, game enough to fight bulls in a pit, yet gentle enough to be great guardian dogs of children… this dog breed has seen it all and done it all.

History

This ancient breed was developed from roman mastiffs that conquered Gaul, the area known today as modern-day France. The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of France’s oldest dogs that were originally considered as three distinct breeds, all of which are named after the area or city they were first bred: Bordeaux, Paris and Toulouse. It was used by butchers and vintners to protect property as well as for blood sport entertainment, fighting large animals such as bears, jaguars and wild boars. These French working dogs came close to extinction after the French Revolution, many were killed because it was considered to be a dog of the wealthy. It again came close to extinction after World War I. The breed was reinvigorated in the 1960s and 1970s, and it continues to be used as a guard dog and companion today.

Personality

A well-socialized and properly trained Dogue de Bordeaux dog will be a great companion pet for a family with children. They will be dogs that will show great amounts of affection towards the family. Their friendly disposition will turn to a suspicious state when strangers are around, may it be humans or other animals. If these dogs are not properly socialized, they will be aggressive to other canines even if they know them. Both males and females of the species are targets of their aggression!

Bred For

Served as a war dog, flock guardian, cattle herder, guard dog, trained to bait bulls, bears, and jaguars, and as a hunter of boars.

Environment

This breed will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised.

Grooming

These are types of dogs that require very little attention to grooming. Dogue de Bordeaux dogs are average shedders.

Training

Training should be done by experienced dog handlers who are firm, consistent and capable of handling the dog’s natural power.

Health

The Dogue de Bordeaux dogs are healthy in general. Some lines of these giant dogs are prone to hip dysplasia which is common for large dog breeds. Although rare, some Dogue de Bordeaux has been recorded to be epileptic. Heart diseases are also known to hit this breed. Female Dogue de Bordeaux’ often undergoes c-section when giving birth to a litter.

Exercise

It is recommended to have Dogue de Bordeaux dogs on a daily exercise regimen. Long walks will be sufficient for these types of dogs to have their energy needs satisfied. Dog owners who wish to have Dogue de Bordeaux for home pets should allocate ample time for the dogs exercise requirements.
