History

Originating from The Netherlands, specifically the Drenth province, the Drentse Patrijshond is a Dutch original. They bear similarities to spaniels as well as setter dogs and are equipped with both dogs’ skills such as pointing and retrieval. The Drentse Patrijshond is a great hunting dog who, often used as a bird hunter. Their skills are top-notched, but their adaptability to all sorts of conditions, terrains and situations which may occur during the hunt makes them superior to other hunting dogs of Europe.

Personality

The Drentse Patrijshond is a powerful medium-sized dog that is known to be an enthusiastic and hardworking gun dog. They are highly trainable, loyal, and obedient but quite sensitive when training is harsh.

Bred For

A hunting dog for the common gentry in The Netherlands. Hunt various small games. Today it is an all-purpose dog that can hunt, play a game, act as a watchdog, and be a child’s companion as many other duties.

Environment

These are not city or apartment types of dogs. This dog breed requires large spaces to thrive and owners who understand their strong hunting instincts.

Grooming

Special attention should be given with their medium-length coat especially in the longest areas which are the ears, tail, neck, feet and legs.

Training

Their high intelligence and eager to please disposition makes them easy to train.

Health

Drentse Patrijshond dogs may be affected with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and hereditary stomatocytosis. But aside from those, these dogs are relatively healthy.

Exercise

Dutch Patridge Dogs are natural hunters and enjoy the company of human outdoorsman who is natural huntsmen as well. They will suffer mental and physical ailments if they are not sufficiently exercised.
