The Drever is a rare dog outside its native country of Sweden. This is a very popular dog breed in Sweden. Their popularity in their native country is comparable to the popularity of the Labrador retriever in its home country!

History

The Drever is a hound breed that originates in Sweden. It is considered to be the re-creation of the local short-legged dog that was used to drive the game towards the gun.

The modern-day Drever was developed by crossing the now very rare Weshpalian Dachsbracke to various hound dogs that are local to Denmark. The Drever was officially named in 1947 and recognized as a distinct breed in 1949. For just a couple of decades, this fairly young dog breed rose to the top as the preferred hunting companions of the Swedish hunters. The breed got its name from the Swedish word Drev, which literally means to hunt. Drever dogs were just built for the hunt.

Personality

First and foremost, the Drever is a born hunter that is prized for their impressive ability to drive prey towards their master’s gun! Drever dogs are naturally good-natured and very friendly towards their master and family. Their high intelligence balances their mischievous side. These are dogs who will always who their affection to family and their masters.
They are highly intelligent, fun-loving and just love hunting with their masters.

Drever dogs will be good apartment dogs.

Grooming

Drever dogs have a smooth-haired coat that does not require a lot of grooming attention but should be rubdown regularly using a damp cloth to have it in tip-top shape. These are dogs that shed hair in the average amount.

Exercise

Drever dogs are very active and possess impressive stamina. If not kept as hunting dogs, Drevers should be taken on long walks every day. It is also recommended to give these dogs ample time to play and run free in the park.
