Introduction

The English Coonhound is not actually an English dog breed, it was first bred in the United States. Therefore, it is usually called the American English Coonhound. However, the English Coonhounds are racy and lean but muscular hound dogs that will be very soft when off duty.

History

The English Coonhound originated in the United States during the late 1800s. It was first registered as a dog breed by United Kennel Club in 1905. They were first registered as the English Fox and Coonhound. This is to signify the breed’s similarity to the two foxhound breeds, the American and the English Foxhounds. It was specifically bred as a hunting dog that can adapt and thrive in America’s rough terrain and harsh climate.

At the turn of the century, all treeing coonhound breeds, except for the Redbone Coonhound and the Black and Tan Coonhound, were considered and recognized as the English Coonhound.

However, throughout the 20th century, coat color variations became a significant factor and they distinguished one English Coonhound from the other. This eventually led to the separation of a number of varieties from the original English Coonhound dog breed. The first to split-off from the original English breed is the heavily ticked Bluetick Coonhound. Today, the majority of the English Coonhounds have red-ticked coat color.

Personality

The English Coonhound is an intelligent dog that is pleasant to be around with, very alert, oozing with confidence and a highly social dog when around humans and other dog breeds. In addition, this Coonhound breed is preferred by practical and competitive hunters for their heightened senses and excellent hunting skills. Also, English Coonhounds are extremely fast when out on the field and are hot-trailers.

English Coonhounds were originally bred and used as fox hunters.

Environment

English Coonhounds are not ideal for apartment dogs. These are hounds that should have enough time to be active outdoors in wide-open spaces. Therefore, an ideal living environment for this breed is suburban or rural areas with big yards where they run freely.

Grooming

English Coonhounds have a short, hard coat that will be very easy to groom. In addition, these are dogs that shed hair in an average amount. Therefore, brushing them once a week will help maintain their coat healthy and shiny. Also, bathing them will make their coat even more beautiful, but it shouldn’t be done often.

Training

English Coonhounds may be difficult to train as they often lose focus and have a tendency to wander around. Also, these dogs can sometimes be very stubborn. Therefore, an experienced trainer will soften them. However, as for any dog, early socialization and training will help them grow up to be very happy and mentally healthy. As a result, they will get used to other dogs and pets and will be great with children.

Health

English Coonhound dogs are generally very healthy. However, as any hound breed, this breed can also suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia. Also, they can suffer from eye infections, bloating and a sudden life-threatening stomach condition.

Exercise

Since these dogs are natural hunters, English Coonhounds will require very vigorous exercise sessions. Therefore, Taking them on extensive runs every day will make these dogs very happy. They are dogs that should go for long and brisk walks every single day. In conclusion, the English Coonhound will be a perfect companion for someone who is an active runner, biker or hiker.
