Introduction

A spaniel dog that can easily adapt to most living conditions is one of the English Springer Spaniel’s assets. These are versatile and flexible dogs that can fit in anywhere as long as they are properly trained. Considered to be the founding father of all dogs in the English spaniel group, this particular breed is famous for being the top choice for gun dogs by European hunters since the times of Renaissance.

History

The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the land spaniels and is closely related to the Cocker Spaniel. It was bred to find, flush and retrieve game. The Springer was recognized as a distinct breed in Britain in 1902. The breed was first imported to the United States in the 1920s and it continues to be used as a hunter as well as a companion.

Personality

This is an outgoing and energetic dog that is hardworking and enthusiastic. English Springer Spaniels are dogs that are easy going and friendly, showing affection with their family. But they may tend to overdo it, as these spaniels are known to act too exuberant when around young children, causing unwanted accidents

Hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdog, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks.

Environment

They will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. English Springer Spaniels adapt well to town or city life.

Grooming

The coat of the field-type Springer is fairly easy to maintain and regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush will keep it looking good; the show-type Springers’ coat needs more attention. This breed is a constant average shedder.

Training

Positive training should be done as younger Springer Spaniels tend to be sensitive when harsh tones are used in training. Training would be moderately difficult but very possible.

Health

Enzyme deficiency, hip dysplasia and temperament problems when not properly trained, socialized and led are the common problems affecting the English Springer Spaniel’s mental and physical health.

Exercise

Springers enjoy as much exercise as you can give them. They need lots of it to be happy. Long walks or jogs should be taken daily.
