History

English Staffordshire Bull Terriers were first developed and bred in England in the early 19th century. They are one of the dog breeds categorized as bull-and-terrier crosses which were popular during that time. Breeders created the Staffordshire specifically for dogfighting. It was initially called the old Pit Bull Terrier. When the blood sport of dogfighting was made illegal, these dogs quickly evolved into a dependable companion. The English Staffordshire Bull Terriers are called Nanny Dogs in their native country. They are the original and prototype dog breed of the American and Irish Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Personality

English Staffordshire Bull Terriers live life to the fullest. They work, live and play in full throttle. Courageous, tenacity and even-temperament is what the Staffordshire is all about. They have a fondness of people and will be very affectionate especially towards children. They are dog-aggressive and should not be trusted around other male dogs.

Bred For

Staffordshire Bull terriers were originally bred for blood sports such as bull-baiting and dogfighting. Today they are popular companion dogs and are trained for cart pulling competitions.

Environment

Staffordshire Bull terriers can adapt to both rural and urban living conditions. They can be apartment pets but make sure that their exercising needs are sufficiently met.
