Introduction

A spaniel that acts more like a setter? That’s the Epagneul Pont-Audemer or most commonly called Pont-Audemer Spaniel. They are not your traditional spaniel breeds and they are also one of the rarest.

History

The French spaniel breed is the product of crossing various spaniel breeds including Irish Water Spaniels, Picardy Spaniels, Poodles, and Barbet. Their origins date back during the early years of the 19th century where it was used as pointing and retrieving hunting dogs when out on a duck hunt. Through the years, their numbers decline and nearly saw extinction after the effects of World War II. Today, a society focused on safeguarding their future has been established; unfortunately, their numbers are still scarce even in their native country.

Personality

They are tagged as clownish for their looks and behavior. Unlike most traditional spaniels who play their role as flushers during a hunt, the Epagneul Pont-Audemer comically acts more like a setter, pointing the prey like most setter dog breeds

Bred For

They are bred primarily for hunting ducks. They have excellent sense of smell which makes them perfect for hunting.

Environment

These are neither city dogs nor apartment type pets. They will thrive in rural areas with lots of space and a hunting job would be ideal.

Grooming

They have a curly coat which is brown and rough. Their rough coat requires regular brushing and grooming.

Training

These dogs are adaptable and a natural hand-workers, two traits which makes them easy to train.

Health

This medium-sized water spaniel is one of the healthiest dog breeds there is, with no known health issues plaguing them.

Exercise

Sufficient exercise is required like most spaniel (and setter) dogs. Daily long walks or jogging is highly recommended. As spaniels, they just love water and should be included in their daily activity as often as possible.
