Introduction

Famous for being one of the most wonderful companion dogs, the Eurasier is a dog breed that is part of the Spitz family. Ironically, these Northern breeds may look Asian and have an oriental name; they were first developed in Germany.

History

The Eurasian or commonly called Eurasier is one of the modern breeds with its creation going back just a couple of decades ago, during the 1960s. The pioneer breeders of these dogs developed them by crossing the Chow Chow, Wolf Spitz and Samoyed to create an ideal guard dog. The breed has caught the attention of Scientist Konrad Lorenz, author of the classic “Man Meets Dog”. It was love at first sight for Lorenz when he first laid eyes on a Eurasian dog. Since then he has become an avid Eurasian enthusiast, primarily because it reminded him of his beloved dog, Stasi, a chow-Alsatian cross.

Personality

The Eurasian is a composed, self-assured dog. It is dependable and dedicated to its family but guarded with strangers. It makes an outstanding watchdog as it is vigilant and on the alert.

Bred For

Primarily to be guardian dogs.

Environment

Does not do well in an outside kennel, chained up or confined to one room. They do best when they are part of the family.

Grooming

Their double coat, thick undercoat and medium length, loose guard hair requires ample time to groom.

Training

These are intelligent dogs that are quick to learn. Socialization, housebreaking and obedience training will be easy if done correctly. They will not respond to harsh and rough training. Repetitive training sessions should be avoided as these dogs have a high tendency to get bored.

Health

Eurasian dogs are prone to eye diseases, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, and temperament issues.

Exercise

A good amount of exercise is a must. This breed needs daily long walks.
