Introduction

Not as popular as their cousins the Golden Retriever and Labrador, the Flat-Coated Retriever is wonderful bird hunters. They use their superior sense of smell and athleticism in the retrieving gamefowls. These dogs are also great hunters on land, showing impressive hunting skills on plains as well as marshy areas and areas with dense plant life.

History

Believed to have been developed by crossing various setters, water spaniels, sheepdogs with the Saint John’s Newfoundland dogs, the Flat-Coated Retriever is the low key version of the Golden Retriever. They can be considered low key because, since its development during the 1800s, it has never reached the popularity of their golden coated cousins. They were considered as a generic Labrador during its early years and were officially called a Retriever Proper back in the day.

During World War I, this breed’s popularity saw a rise as a hunting, fishing and pet companion dog. But after the war, their numbers dwindled severely with most pet owners opting to have Labradors or Golden Retrievers as they were inexpensive and easier to find and buy. In 1915, the American Kennel Club officially recognized this breed and included it in the Sporting Dog group for their talents in retrieving, hunting, tracking, watchdog and agility.

Personality

The large and athletic Flat-Coated Retrievers are good-natured family dogs who are perfect with children of all ages. Their reliable temperament and puppy-like disposition make them a little too friendly as they will treat everyone, even strangers as part of the family. Enthusiastic and fun-loving, these retrievers may tend to be a bit exuberant for younger children. But this can be changed through proper training.

Environment

The Flat-Coated Retriever is a dog that suits rural and suburban homes with ample space. They are not suited for city living. These dogs do not do well in apartment or condominium buildings.

Grooming

The feathered coat of the Flat-Coated Retriever will require minimal grooming attention. These dogs only need minor trimming to maintain a healthy coat. These retrievers shed averagely.

Training

These dogs are highly trainable and very obedient.

Health

The possible health concerns to watch out for the Flat-Coated Retrievers are cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, thyroid problems and their tendency to bloat or be obese.

Exercise

This active dog needs a daily walk or jogs to be on its best behavior. The Flat-Coated Retriever makes an excellent jogging companion.
