Adopt a Fox Terrier, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

Fox Terrier has two varieties, each distinctive by their coats. There are the Smooth Fox Terrier, origins of which can be traced back as far as the 1790s, made famous by Colonel Thornton portrait painting of his Smooth Fox Terrier dog named Pitch. Then there is the Wirehaired Fox Terrier, pet to English royalty including Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, and also popularized in several movies, novels and comic strips in the 20th century.

History

Until 1984, the Smooth and the Wirehaired Fox terrier were considered the same breed and were commonly mixed and crossed as a single breed, although they are believed to originate from different sources. These dog breeds are truly impossible to differentiate, with the exception of their coats. Fox Terriers were bred to drive foxes from holes and are longer-legged than most terriers. The fox terriers’ are from crosses of different breeds including the smooth-coated Black-and-Tan Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the Greyhound and the Beagle. The breed gained official recognition and initial documentation as a distinctive breed from other terriers in 1970.

Personality

The Fox Terrier is a friendly dog that is alert and intelligent. They are a breed known to be very bold and active with a tendency to dig. They are not good with small animals, which it often sees as prey. Also, these dogs can be too exuberant for small children.

Bred For

Originally used as fox hunters and vermin catchers. Today these terriers are used various purposes including hunting, tracking, watchdog, agility and performing tricks.

Environment

The Fox Terrier will be fine in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. These dogs are very active indoors but will do okay without a yard.

Grooming

The short coat of the Smooth and Wirehaired Fox Terriers are easy to groom. Both breeds are an average shedder, blowing the coat twice a year.

Training

Their intelligence will make training relatively easy compared to other terriers. The right dog may be trained to perform tricks!

Health

Cushing’s disease, deafness, hip dysplasia, Legg-Perthes disease, luxating patellas, and skin allergies are the most common health problems that affect both Fox Terrier variety.

Exercise

This breed needs to be taken on a daily, long walk or jog.
