History

The French Bulldog, although just recently known in the United States with the breed being brought in this country just in the early 1900s, are considered to be an old dog breed. It was bred specifically as a companion dog. These dogs were created from the miniature Bulldogs which was brought to France by the English working-class emigrants. These English bulldogs eventually bred with native dog breeds and soon caught the eye of the trendy Parisian circle. These new bulldogs were shorter and smaller in size, and as most French would agree, cuter than their ancestors. The modern French Bulldogs became so popular in the French capital that they were the dog of choice by streetwalkers or famously known as the Parisian “Belles De Nuit”.

Personality

The French Bulldog is the perfect dog to adopt if you are looking for a pet that will get along with everyone. This bulldog type of breed is known to get along with children and other animals. They are so friendly that they tend to get along with strangers as well! But the French Bulldogs were not bred to be guard dogs. They are companion pets and they thrive as such. These dogs can be stubborn at times, especially when the owners spoil them. But they also show great affection and high intelligence. All in all, the French Bulldog breed is a stable dog breed that can be considered as one of the best family dogs to have.

Like their much larger cousins, the English Bulldogs, the Frenchies are plagued with several health issues, the most common are atopy, back problems, brachycephalic syndrome, elongated soft palate, and heatstroke.
