History
The French Spaniel was first recorded in history during the fourteenth century. It was described by Count of Foix Gaston III or Gaston Phoebus, one of the greatest huntsmen of the 14th century. The Count of Foix included it in his book “Livre de Chasse” or Book of the Hunt. The Epagneul Francais, its official name in France, is closely related to two dog breeds; the Drentse Patrijshond or the Dutch Partridge Dog and the German Small Munsterlander. Like all the dogs included in the Spaniel family, the French Spaniel can is also related and a distant descendant of the middle ages setting dog Chien d’Oysel. French Spaniel dogs were originally used as a hunter of birds with its fame rising all through the sixteenth century. The advent of English spaniel breeds forced their numbers to dwindle. But during the nineteenth century, the breed saw a revival lead by French priest Father Fournier. The modern standard for this dog breed was set in 1891 by James de Connick. It is one of the rarest dog breeds today, so rare that their numbers are low even in their native country France.

Personality
French Spaniels are medium-sized dogs that are muscular and elegant. Physical they are similar to the English setting dogs. Personality-wise they are intelligent, eager to please and hardworking. These traits make them highly trainable. Their natural instinct to be even-tempered, friendly and calm makes the French Spaniel a dog breeds that get along well with everybody. This includes children of all ages. As a spaniel, they adore water activities where their playful side will show.

Bred For
Hunting birds on rugged terrain as well as flushing waterfowls.

Environment
The French Spaniel will not thrive and fair well in apartment buildings. Like most spaniel breeds, these dogs require a lot of space to move around. The French Spaniel is a breed that is resistant to cold and wet weather conditions.

Grooming
It is generally a low-maintenance dog. French Spaniels shed very little.

Training
French Spaniels are dogs that train well but are sensitive and are easily intimidated. Training should be done in a gentle, firm and consistent manner.

Health
Of all the breeds included in the spaniels’ dog group, the French Spaniel is one of the healthiest as there are no known health problems to plague them.

Exercise
French Spaniel dogs are known for their high stamina. Having this makes these dogs addicted to exercise and outdoor activities. They need daily extensive exercise sessions which includes taking them for walks or jogging alongside with them.
