History

German Hunt Terrier dogs are relatively young for a dog breed having developed only at the turn of the twentieth century. These dogs are bred and used across their native country as very reliable and functional hunting dogs for various game type animals. They hunt wild boars, badgers, foxes, and even weasels. When it reached Northern America, they were found to be perfect treeing dogs, showing impressive hunting performance when hunting raccoons and squirrels. They were often used as pack hunters with hounds, given the task to bolt their prey.

Personality

The German Hunt Terrier dog breed is a medium-size dog with a narrow and square physique. They are known to be clever, tough and fearless while on the hunt. Their strong work drive makes them impressive hunters. These dogs are affable when it comes to family, but will show wariness when around strangers. This trait makes them very protective by nature. A number of dog breeds find the German Hunt Terries a little bit too aggressive as a family pet and should only be used as working dogs. But most disagree as this dog can be trained to be less aggressive.

Bred For

Sportsmen and breeders developed these dogs as treeing dogs. They are excellent treeing game animals such as raccoons and squirrels.

Environment

These terrier dogs are not for apartment type living. They do not do well in the city. Rural areas with homes that have large yards are recommended.

Grooming

Their smooth, harsh and abundant coating requires little grooming attention. It is also easy grooming German Hunt Terrier dogs. These are terrier dogs that will shed hair in the average amount.

Training

Proper and firm training should be done early. This breed can become willful and hard to manage when pack leadership or insufficient daily activity is not present.

Health

They are one of the healthiest of all German dog breeds. No known case of major or minor health issues affects this breed.

Exercise

This dog breed is demanding when it comes to activity needs. A great deal of time from their owners are required to satisfy their exercise needs. When not out on the hunt it needs to be taken on a daily long walk or jog.
