History
Their roots can be traced as far back as Roman times. Similar dogs were used by the Celts for hunting small game. Modern-day Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen was developed from the Grand Griffon at the end of the nineteenth century, a time when fanciers of were looking for a straight-legged basset to be used on small game and deer. It is an accomplished hunter on a larger game as well. They got their name from the region of France which they came from, Vendee. Although at present times, these medium-sized hounds are used more like family pets, a good number of them are still used to hunt. They show impressive skills in hunting boar, dear as well as tracking hares and rabbits.

Personality
They are pack hunters by heart! These scent hounds are intense, fun-loving and hardworking by nature. Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen dogs are just packed with energy and will show you how lively they are through barking. Yes, these dogs are very vocal, but they generally friendly and good-natured. Children will be safe around them as they get along very well with kids of all ages.

Developed for hunting small games. Pioneer breeders created a straight-legged basset that is versatile pack hunters.

Environment
These dogs are not an apartment or condo types of pets. Rural and suburban homes with a yard will make them happy.

Grooming
Weekly brushing should be done on their coat to avoid being tied up in little knots. Regular maintenance would make them relatively easy to groom.

Training
These dogs are not hard to train. But be patient and give them time. They need firm handling and their training progress depends on the time you can devote.

Health
Generally healthy as a dog breed, the only health concern with the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen dogs is their tendency to get ear infections.

Exercise
Owners of Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen dogs should devote time for outdoor activities. They are hunting dogs by instinct and will require lots of exercise and space to satisfy their high energy levels.
