History
The Griffon Nivernais is at least several centuries old. These dogs were developed in central France and were used for hunting wild boar as well as other large game type animals. These scent hounds were specially bred to live and work in cold weather conditions. Like most dogs of French nobility, their numbers diminished and the few remaining ended up being scattered all over Europe during the French Revolution. Most believed that the original Griffon Nivernais have been lost. But the development of modern Griffon Nivernais dogs stayed true to the rough-coated and rustic appearance of the original lines. This is also a dog breed that is considered among one of the rarest in the world.

Personality
The Griffon Nivernais is a large and muscular dog that is well bonded. Their physical appearance matches their courageous and hardworking personality. They are enthusiastic hunters and will be vocal almost all of the time. They are independent and can be a bit stubborn at times.

Bred For
Used to hunt wild boars and other large game.

Environment
They are not apartment type dogs and will not be suited in city living. These dogs love rural areas and the great outdoors. They will enjoy roaming difficult terrain and thickets.

Grooming
No special grooming requirements.

Training
The training is moderately easy. These dogs should be trained early during their puppyhood stage.

Health
Griffon Nivernais dogs have excellent health records with no known hereditary health problems.

Exercise
Griffon Nivernais dogs have high exercise needs. Having regular walks and occasional weekly outings will be sufficient to address their high energy and the natural urge to hunt.
