History

During the eighteenth century, Irish hunters created a dog breed specifically to hunt upland game birds. They crossed various dog breeds from different groups, combining spaniels, pointers and setters of English lineage with Gordon Setters. The end result is the Irish Setter. During their initial years, developers of the Irish Setter dog breed produced both red and white and solid red dogs. Today the Irish Red and White Setters are considered to be a separate breed.

Personality

There are a lot of things to love with the active and playful Irish Setter. These are dogs that are very outgoing, lively and very friendly as well. They are never aggressive or hostile and will always get along with children and other dogs.

Irish Setters were used as setting dogs. They also show impressive skills in hunting, tracking, retrieving and pointing. To top that, Irish Setters are also known to be excellent watchdogs. Environment

The Irish Red Setter should be avoided to keep as apartment dog pets. They can adapt to this type of dwelling environment only if they have their high levels of energy satisfied through vigorous exercise. along with them. This breed does best with a large yard.

Grooming

Irish Red Setters should be groomed daily by brush or comb. These setting dogs have a soft flat coat that is easy to groom but requires regular sessions to do it. These Irish dogs will shed hair in average amounts.

Training

The Irish Setter dog breed is known to be tough to train if they sense weakness on their owners or handlers.

Health

The Irish Setter is a dog breed that tends to gain weight easily, especially if their feeding is not supervised. Instead of feeding these dogs heavy meals, owners are advised to give them three meals that have small servings. There are a handful of medical conditions that Irish setters are commonly plagued with. These include epileptic seizures, skin allergies that may turn to severe dermatitis problems. These dogs are also known to have high risks of acquiring elbow and hip dysplasia. Other diseases common among these setting dogs are hypothyroidism, eye problems, autoimmune diseases and ear infections.

Exercise

Irish Setters like all dogs in the setter group need daily long brisk walks or jogging sessions with their owners. Failure to do so will make them restless and very difficult to manage as home pets.
